Data for Racial Justice hero

Our Mission and Vision

Our mission is to equip legal practitioners with the statistical and data science competencies required to understand, interpret, and apply quantitative evidence of racial disparities in criminal justice systems, with a specific focus on litigation and advocacy under the California Racial Justice Act. We support legal practitioners by strengthening statistical literacy, analytical reasoning, and the practical use of empirical data in legal proceedings.

We emphasize the accurate evaluation of data sources, methodologies, and limitations; the responsible use of statistical evidence; and the clear communication of quantitative findings in legal contexts. Through this work, we aim to enhance evidentiary rigor, support the effective enforcement of racial justice statutes, and contribute to more equitable and accountable criminal justice outcomes.

Upcoming Events

Research Working Group

Second Thursday of the month | 11a-12p PT

The Research Working Group is a space to explore emerging research questions related to racial disparities, legal decision-making, measurement, and RJA implementation. We use the group to share ideas, develop collaborations, discuss ongoing projects, and identify opportunities where research can support practitioners and advance the field. We meet at 11:00am PT on the second Thursday of each month for open discussion and research exchange. Whether you’re actively conducting research, looking for collaborators, or interested in learning about new developments in the field, we’re glad you’re here and look forward to the conversation.

Data Working Group

Last Friday of the month | 9a-10a PT

The Data Working Group focuses on the practical challenges of RJA analysis, including data access, data quality, standardization, methodology, and the development of shared tools and resources. Our goal is to help reduce duplication of effort, improve consistency, and make high-quality analysis more accessible across jurisdictions. We meet at 9:00am PT on the last Friday of each month to discuss ongoing projects, common data challenges, and opportunities for collaboration. This is a space where to share expertise, learn from others, and contribute to collective resources.

Ready Response Office Hours

Every Other Thursday | 12pm PST

Ready Response Office Hours focus on social science research and statistical best practices. They are an accessible, informal way to get feedback on how to formulate a statistically valid claim of racial disparity. All questions are welcomed – one-on-one consultations available in breakout sessions.
